If you don’t know what carotenoids are, then you’ve come to the right place. The three carotenoids in MacuPrime are essential when it comes to rebuilding macular pigment and giving your eyes the daily protection they need.
So, what are carotenoids?
A carotenoid is a plant pigment that can be found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, including green leafy vegetables. These can also be found in the back of your eye, in the retina, where they naturally gather from the day we are born. Carotenoids are what give fruits and vegetables their vibrant red, yellow, and orange colour. They’re found in high amounts in green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli, and they’re known to have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.
Amazingly, while there are over 700 varieties of carotenoids in nature, only three have been discovered to naturally accumulate in the macula (Lutein, Meso-Zeaxanthin, and Zeaxanthin). It is these three critical carotenoids that are present in MacuPrime.
Did you Know?
- From the day we are born, our bodies are designed to absorb and gather Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin in our eyes and brain. Colostrum, the first breast milk, is often called ‘liquid gold’. That’s down to the extremely high levels of carotenoids in the breast milk, giving it that yellow colour.
- Carotenoids naturally accumulate in our eyes to form the yellow protective layer that sits in front of the macula, called the macular pigment.
- This carotenoid packed macular pigment is really important for our eye health. It protects the retina from damage, filters blue light, fights inflammation and acts as a powerful antioxidant.
- When the carotenoid levels are low in our eyes, the macular pigment breaks down which can result in blurred vision, poor contrast sensitivity, significant discomfort in sunlight glare or headlight glare at night and most importantly may lead to a condition known as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
- To get the necessary daily carotenoid dose for the average human, you’d have to eat 1.7 cups of kale, 11,904 entire trout, and 1.8 cups of orange pepper every day. (10mg Lutein, 10mgMeso-Zeaxanthin, and 2mg Zeaxanthin) Clinical research studies have proven that this exact quantity of carotenoids are needed every single day to rebuild and maintain a healthy macular pigment.
- Our bodies cannot produce carotenoids so we have to get them through our diet. The only animals known to produce carotenoids are aphids and mites. These animals get their genes from fungi.
- There are over 700 known carotenoids. They are of two types of carotenoids, xanthophylls (these contain oxygen) and carotenes (these are hydrocarbons with no oxygen).
- Carotenoids are lipid-soluble pigments. This means that consuming them with a fat or oil will help our bodies absorb them. Cooking and chopping carotenoid-rich foods increases the potency of the nutrients when they enter the bloodstream, unlike other protein-rich foods and vegetables.
- Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants that can help your immune system and protect you from disease. Vitamin A, which is required for growth, immune system function, and eye health, can be produced from provitamin A carotenoids. Any references to back this up?
- Carotenoids have been associated with a reduction in cancer risk, particularly lung cancer. When a person smokes cigarettes, they inhale dangerous chemicals that cause their healthy cells to die. When people ate more carotenoids, their risk of lung cancer was reduced slightly, according to one study. This is a big claim do we have the reference to this study that we can include and back it up?
Carotenoids – a simple solution for good eye health
Taking a MacuPrime capsule on a daily basis is a simple and convenient way to nourish your macular pigment with the ideal quantities of carotenoids. The macular pigment, when at its optimum level, works to filter blue light and Decreases oxidative stress produced by ageing, shielding the macula from daily damage.
Having a healthy, nourished macular pigment with all three essential macular carotenoids will help protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and central vision loss in the long run.
